Taipei, Day 6: Moments
Image
mo·ment (mmnt)
n.
1. A brief, indefinite interval of time.
2. A specific point in time, especially the present time: He is not here at the moment.
3. A particular period of importance, influence, or significance in a series of events or developments: a great moment in history; waiting for her big moment.
4. Outstanding significance or value; importance: a discovery of great moment.
5. A brief period of time that is characterized by a quality, such as excellence, suitability, or distinction: a lackluster performance that nevertheless had its moments.
6. Philosophy
a. An essential or constituent element, as of a complex idea.
b. A phase or an aspect of a logically developing process.
I remember making a realization on this day.
It will not be specific objects or things that I will take home with me from a trip. It will not be images/sights/sounds of a place that I visit. It will be memorable moments that have an impactful punch to my memory bank. It might just be simple moments like sitting on a bus, or sharing an umbrella under the rain, maybe even how painful my feet felt after walking a mile or perhaps even eating sharing a sushi roll and feeding it to everyone along the way. But these moments attach themselves to the place, and therefore make it memorable.
Anyway the weather was bad. It was kinda cold. And Esther and I were kinda bored. So we sat under the bridge and started cam-whoring/video-whoring while waiting for the rain to stop.
We both actually didnt have a clue of what we were gonna record. It was 100% impromptu and that’s why super hilarious.
Please (I beg you) turn off the video sound if you decide to play it. Or just mute your entire computer.
Don’t judge us because we were just two simple girls having a good time.
Like what I said earlier– MOMENTS
Was contemplating real hard whether or not to share this. I just love that this is 100% candid.
This was another super random one. I swear it was not planned. Pressed the record button and started filming before realizing that someone was opening the shutters. I bet the person thought we were mad. HAHAHAHHA
Visited to shilin night market again for the second time!
This time, i didn’t go as crazy shopping as i did for the first time. but still bust all the cash in my wallet. I had to look to the “central bank”/lender of last resort a.k.a my aunt for extra money. Haha thank goodness i didn’t need to seek for my uncle’s help. he acted as the economic/political union. didn’t go that far.

GUESS WHO’S BACK? :)

Sorry for the haul. I will finish up my travelogue for Taiwan and then start on Bangkok.
Didn’t get to do it today cos I was in bed most of the time.
Stay tuned
Crossings.
So last Friday evening, I hurried down to the Lee Foundation Theatre at NAFA after work for a diploma in Dance showcase, “Crossings 2012″.
Was really excited getting the invites actually because I’ve always wanted to make time to catch a dance concert but just never really got the time and opportunity to. When I was younger, I used to catch Ballet Under the Stars every year without fail. Would usually gather my rhythmic gym or dance friends together for it!
Anyway, there were 4 pieces put together and I enjoyed each and every single one of it! They were simple contemporary or some might call it, modern dance.
Didn’t manage to catch the first one as I was late:(
The second item was really abstract.
It was a dance put together by a bunch of dancers displaying their individuality through their own interpretation of the music. I started laughing after a bit cos I just got reminded of how I blast music in my room and dance on my bed when nobody’s watching, or maybe just being absolutely insane and crazy with my steppers friends back in Thailand a year plus ago.

Actually, I secretly wished then and there I could run up on stage to join in. HAHAHAH. okay just kidding (maybe a little bit).
I only took 1 picture of the third item because I was too busy watching. The dancers were really good ![]()

I loved the last piece so much!!!!!! It was ballet, and the girls were on pointe!!!!!!!!
No fancy pirouettes that I thought I would be able to witness sadly ![]()
REALLLLY really feel like gathering my DA JI TI rg girls back. squeeze into our mega tiny leotards and perform our routine again! ![]()
But back to the performance, even though the lack of pirouettes, it was beautiful. I couldn’t stop staring at the lines, their pointe, and Pas de Deux!!!!!! Reallly amazing dancers!
My pictures below don’t do enough justice, honestly.

Anyway, I deliberately saved the Ebony Crossback dress in Maroon for that evening ![]()
Thought it was perfect for a concert! Thank you INHOUSEFASHION!!!! ![]()

I love the chiffon and how flowy it is!!!!!!! Used a stick on bra as the back was low and I didn’t wanna be conscious of my bra showing at any single time of the day.
This piece comes in black too!!!
SHOP AT INHOUSEFASHION TODAY and do check out their contest HERE!
It’s free clothes that they’re giving out, so it’s definitely worth a visit. You never know you could be the lucky one!
I really love inhousefashion!
Have a great week ahead everyone!
Trying to get my TAIPEI day 5 post out soon. HATE WORDPRESS LIKE HELL AT THE MOMENT. Thinking of moving but I have yet to figure where to go.
Taipei, Day 4: That’s what life is all about
One of my favourite parts about traveling and holidays is that you feel as though you have all the time in the world. No stress, no rush, no hurry. The day is yours and yours only. I love that. And I know it’s kinda silly to pay $ to feel carefree.
It’s not like every other normal working day of the year.. where there’s always something at the back your mind– like constantly reminding myself that i gotta wake up early in the morning, so i gotta sleep early (or earlier); gotta go to somewhere less crowded for lunch cos i gotta hurry back to office; gotta rush for the train if not I won’t get to squeeze in; gotta hurry home after work because I’ve got an advertorial to run; gotta finish up my shoot quickly because i am gonna be late for the next activity planned. It’s always a race, and even with a stamina of a cheetah, it gets tiring after some time.
It’s really really a relief to just get these things off my mind for good for some period of time. Like I could take my own sweet time to dress up in the morning; spend time at night choosing my outfit for the next day; record 30984208032 videos over and over again with my cousin, Esther, and laugh our asses off at how stupid we are; queue up at the longest queue for food just because I feel like eating it; miss the train and not run for it as if it is going to cost my life; wander the streets, explore, learn and experience; sit down at a place while waiting for the rain to stop; sleep only when i’m feeling tired; wake up only when i feel well-rested. I wish every day could be like that.
So on our 4th day, we decided to take a break from all the shopping. I honestly think it was an overkill on day 1. day 2 and day 3 I slowed down. We headed to JIU FEN!:)
Learnt how to get there through WIKI. All hail wiki!
I think the instructions are pretty idoit proof:
By train
From Taipei, take the train north to Ruifang Station. From Ruifang take the Keelung Transit bus from the bus stops in front of the train station to Jiufen. Be sure to line up across the road to go to Jiufen and Jinguashi. The bus trip is roughly 15 minutes. Not all buses are equipped to show the correct driving direction or have bilingual signs.
The bus stop heading to Jiufen and Jinguashi is no longer right across from the Ruifang Train Station. Instead exit the Ruifang Train Station and turn left staying on the busy street right in front of the train station. Staying on the right hand side of the street keep walking straight until you pass a police station. The bus stop heading to Jiufen and Jinguashi will located a little past the police station.
My advice: Just ask around to be sure. You can’t get lost.
So this was a picture taken from the bus stop where we waited for the bus to Jiu Fen. Across the street from RuiFang Station!
It was really breathtaking when we got up. ![]()

On the way there in the train. I got kinda tired right after this last picture, I fell asleep!!! Hahaha.

there’s a certain drawing aboutrailway tracks, don’t you agree? ![]()

80% of the time we just stopped to eat. Like stall after stall. ![]()

SNAILS!

outfit that day:) My pretty watch is the same one as what I wore in my posts on Day 3! It’s the same watch face, but changed the straps. SUPER FUNCTIONAL because it could match my outfits EVERY SINGLE DAY. i just played around with the strap colours.
Like people who truly appreciate the finer things in life, we sat down for an afternoon tea. Not the English kinda tea, but the traditional chinese tea drinking. It was pretty cool how the actually had different rounds of pouring the hot water. First the wash the cups. Second to wash the tea leaves. Third for us to smell, and finally to drink. I’ve a video actually but my disk space is choked up so badly, I don’t think I will ever be able to upload it onto my computer/blog! And i’m pretty sure by the time I get it fixed and cleared, I’d have forgotten about it.

I’ve kinda grown to like chinese tea, so it was a really enjoyable experience for me. I think it cost about $40 bucks per person just for that experience. But it was raining, so it served us as shelter at the same time.

We actually had in plan to go do the lantern thing which was at shi fen but because of bad weather we cancelled that.
Instead, we headed to Ning Xia for a very good and satisfying meal. I think Ning Xia is my favourite food/night market. ![]()

had steak!

Ok the next picture is going to kill. This was my “favouritest” food item the entire trip. As much as i loved the fried chicken, mutton soup and beef noodles. I think this was to die for. I went back again on the second last night there but it was sold out:(
CHEESE PANCAKE!! I had 2. Nai you (which is butter i guess) and cheese. THE CHEESE ONE WAS TO DIE FOR. I’m not exaggerating.

Ning xia has a whole load of nice food but ZERO shopping. So because thenight was still young, we took a cab down to Shida Night Market. Cost us about 300TWD from Ning Xia!
And here’s to share my shopping loots that day:

Bought this cos the buttons were little gold rose studs, very cute ![]()

This is the black version of what I wore that day! Loved it so much I bought more. Actually bought a few extra white pieces a few days later as well.

The night ended with beef noodles at Shida. I think it was the best beef noodles stall we had on our entire trip in Taipei.
Shida was a really pretty street and obviously, the 2 hours there wasn’t enough so we decided to head back again!!!
I think I’m truly a shopperholic.
Was greeted with a tonne of parcels on my desk when I got back from Taiwan. And amongst which was this pretty skirt from Just Lovace. I wore it on the very next day cos I just couldn’t wait

I’m loving the intricate details so much
It’s now one of my favourite bandage skirts in my wardrobe!

Change Parade!

Am I the only one with this issue or do you girls feel the same?
Anyway, those were my exact sentiments for this Ally Sweetheart Pink Tube Dress from changeparade!
I think this is my 7th similar looking tube dress in my wardrobe but I can’t seem to have enough of them. If you’ve been reading my blog for long enough, you’d probably have a recollection of the red one I wore for halloween 2 years back and the black one I wore a year ago. And another maroon one I put on for Chinese New Year..
I mean, the most important part of a tube dress to me would be the bust line, and now that I’ve got another piece to add from changeparade, it’s definitely a keeper because I <3 the cut so much PLUS it's in my fav colour– pink!
I tend to avoid straight tubes because it just makes flat girls appear even flatter. Anyway, changeparade has a whole load of other pretty apparel, I think if I had them all sponsored, this would be a thousand word entry post.
Actually wanted to share a few of my favourites but I reckoned that it would be too many and the post would be too long. So bear with me, and scroll through the next gazillion photos of myself in the Ally Sweetheart Pink Tube Dress! (LOOK AT THE DRESS NOT MY FACE, THANKS!)

And check out my super model pose. HAHAHAHAHA okay a bit bu yao lian to have pictures like such posted. But that was 100% candid okay? I was adjusting my hair! HEHE.

Have a great week ahead.

Aside
So as I’m sipping my baileys in the krisflyer lounge while waiting to board my plane, I have some inspiration to share my two cents worth on fashion (shorts in particular) and age.
Don’t read on if it’s not of interest to you. But because I enjoy writing, and penning my thoughts in words, I shall proceed.
Let me start by terming the “gen Y’s” and “middle age” on grounds that it amounts to a little more discrimination and the danger of fashion segregation. Sometimes, I wonder the age segmentation of my readers, and if actually different styles appeal to them individually.
Supposing if I could even clearly define what middle age is, I don’t think one would want to be shuffled off into a group whose tenets supposedly include, “no unnaturally blonde hair, no miniskirts, no big and bold prints”. I paused before writing the last one on prints because I know some people (close to heart) actually either love or detest prints. It’s pretty extreme. And to be even more specific, animal prints– like zebra, leopard, snake or any night safari animal.
Well, I don’t know if this is a point of contention of age appropriateness (AA) or dignity or familiarity and exposure.
But let me digress slightly, and take this in context of the “middle age” group and the idea of shorts. I don’t mean berms but short fitted shorts. I believe even a 40 year aged woman with great legs would have second thoughts of going out clad in a pair of shorts. To them, in my opinion, shorts need to be a part of a shorts suit- as in those sent down the runway by the likes of Jil Sanderm and Givenchy.

I don’t think this applies to the young though. Shorts are versatile and have the capacity to (positively) change one’s silhouette. They thing to do is to play with the proportions and see what works best. It’s unusual at this stage in the fashion game to come across any thing that can effect such a change.
So well to abruptly conclude with a onesie advice– be bold and daring. I wouldn’t say that I’m extremely adventurous with my dressing. But, it will be nice to go out and experiment different kindza styles.
Don’t take fashion too seriously.
Time to rush off before my plane leaves without me!
But before i zhao,
HAPPY 100th Collection TTR! I <3 you!
Behind the scenes:

Hope there’s many many more to come!
Taipei, Day 3: Act Yi Ge Atas
Aside
So on Day 3, we covered quite a bit planned in our itinerary. Started off with a superbly gratifying lunch at shin yeh. It was just a simple middle-upper class chinese restaurant with quite a decent ambiance. We were there just in time for lunch and the crowds were not too overbearing.

Headed towards Taipei 101 and the malls around that area. We were desperately looking for a place to sit and sip afternoon tea because the weather called a perfect occasion for afternoon high tea.

Ended up with frozen yogurt in the end. It was good
I think i’m just a sucker for froyo!

And here’s my favourite guess watch
tweeted and facebooked it via instagram that day!!

After much walking, we decided to settle for an early dinner– Ramen! Uncle Tom actually found this place thru a review from http://hungryintaipei.blogspot.com/ and we decided to give it a try.
BAD CHOICE. I didn’t think it was anything fantastic cos the noodles were too fat for my liking.
The soup was kinda thick and the meat really fatty! I think the only redeeming part was the joy esther and i got out of poking fun at the waitresses’ whiny voice. Okay, we aren’t usually that bitchy, but she really took it over the top. Her attitude was really poor, so much so that her colleague (some apparently cute looking guy with slit eyes) had to take over serving us. Maybe she was just on PMS that day. Anyway, uncle tom recorded a video of me ordering food! Kinda retarded. Maybe i’ll compile all the videos and upload them another time.
Right now, my laptop is desperately running out of memory space. I think I lost all my photos in my iphoto library. I need to make a trip down to apple.

It was past sunset by the time we got out of the restaurant and mutually decided against going up to the top of taipei 101. REALLY HATE BAD WEATHER
The skies didn’t clear up for us at all that night.

Instead, we shopped at Taipei 101. It was pretty much an upscale shopping centre. Spent most of our time in Zara! And I found GUESS!
Love guess watches a lot. I had to stop by to look at them!

managed to capture some gorgeous photos of the buildings on the way back to the MRT Station. I love how buildings light up in the night sky. That’s one main draw to cities for me personally. It’s no bright light syndrome or whatever term you wanna coin it but I really truly enjoy lit up buildings.

Our night did not end there! We headed to SHIDA YE SHI after making a quick stop back at our hotel! I had to change into jeans and clad on a thicker sweater cos it was getting quite chilly.
I really love how shida ye shi is organized. One of my favourite night markets. Not too crowded and messy. Not too overwhelming (like wufenpu). Sadly, I wasn’t really on form that night so I didn’t really buy much.

Uncle Tom was happy that night cos we kept his tummy filled. He had a fried oyster omelette while waiting for kuku and esther to buy some clothes. Then while we was following me down the street, he had a cookie ice cream!
Thereafter, we all stopped for beef noodles! I was with him most of the time, so I had a bite of everything. ALL SERIOUSLY YUMMY ![]()

Our night ended with beef noodles. I think that was the start of the entire beef noodle craze this trip. You’ll find out more in later posts!
Taipei, Day 4 is on the way!
Taiwan, Day 2
I love my blog and it has grown to become a big part of me that I have no qualms about staying up to the wee hours in the morning just to update it. It’s not to please my readers. It’s not for the sake of being on track with my posts. It’s not to ensure my viewership stats are on an increasing roll. But it’s all out of love for my own blog. It’s like my own little journal that I will always enjoy looking back on. Maybe I could publish it into a book 50 years down the road! *just kidding!
So without much digression, here’s my DAY 2 post.
Headed out to Zhongxiao Fuxing for dim sum first thing in the morning
Heard that taipei had the first DTF and so we had to try it. In my opinion, nothing much different from the one in Singapore, except that it is a lot cheaper. I’m quite a big fan of DTF. I love their xiao long baos, egg fried rice and dan dan mian in particular.

I believe we were reasonably early (11am) but there was still at 20 minute wait. But that’s okay because Esther (my cousin) and I can very easily entertain ourselves with videos/pictures/pure random bull shit.

DTF’s standard: glass window with chefs making xiao long baos. Immediately recalled the DTF outlet in Seattle where the chefs in that glass window were not chinese. It was quite a cute scene.

Given that we had to wait for quite a while, the waitress gave us an order form to order our food so that they could prepare in advance! BUTTTTTTT…. the order form was in CHINESE, and NONE of us (including Esther, who’s supposedly the best) could make out the dishes on the form. I guess the only obvious one was XIAO LONG BAO! But even then, they had one with the TANG (soup) and the other without the TANG (soup)! Lucky that we ordered the right ones.

We wandered around for quite a bit before Uncle Tom decided to make us take a really long and dreadful walk to BREEZE CENTRE. It was somewhat in the same area, but you know.. we wanted to conserve our feet energy for some real shopping. We were so drained and tired by the time we got to WUFENPU!
None of us had any idea what Breeze Centre was. I mean, the name is kinda deceiving. We were expecting some sightseeing site but it was just a mid to high-end mall. And according to uncle tom, that’s sightseeing too. See and don’t buy. But well, I was elated to find that Taipei carried Aveda products. My fav shampoo brand!!! Bought a tonne of it in NYC and Seattle but it’s kinda costly to get that back in Singapore. I’m not that high maintenance one.
So finally, we arrived at WUFENPU!!!!!
And it started to rain. It didn’t dampen our spirits much but I was keeping my fingers tightly crossed that the sun would come up.
One thing I noticed about Taipei is that there are hardly any REAL clouds in the sky. Clouds make really pretty sunset and sunrises, but sadly, I didn’t see any.
It was either largely overcast or just hazy and misty. Not complaining too much about the weather because it’s at perfect temperature for my kind of habitat. Hehe. PLUS/MINUS TWENTY– I love it! ![]()

Was slightly excited to see a whole bunch of shops filled with bags and bags of clothes! Bought something from the very first shop I stepped into.

Uncle Tom is kinda amazing to be able to follow us through row and row of shops. But food keeps him going (and happy). We must always keep his tummy in mind.
Girls, must find this kinda husbands next time! ![]()

So anyway, Uncle Tom and Kuku bought this really cool ice cream popiah thingy filled with peanuts. It was damn yummy!
))))) Must try!
We ended off Wu Fen Pu by around 5pm because we were all drained. I was a little surprised at my lack of enthusiasm that day. Would usually have been able to last a lot better but I severely underperformed.
There were sooo many shops there but I guess because it was a little homogenous after awhile I got quite bored I didn’t even bother walking into every single shop.
Our next and last stop for the day: RAO HE!
Technically our first NIGHT MARKET of our holiday. All was good except for the weather. Again, the weather. Because it started to drizzle and then pour, we did not have a chance to fully explore the entire place. Spent most of the time seeking shelter.

A must eat there is the MUTTON SOUP! We found a random shop along the road for mutton soup and it was helluva good!
(Got some pictures but i will upload them another day and insert them here)

We also had the famous taiwanese crispy fried chicken right after the mutton soup! better than popeyes or KFC!

hu jiao bing thereafter! This was from the stall right at the entrance. There was a pretty long queue but it was so yummy, all of us agreed that it was worth the wait.

Dom always refers me to as a monkey because I keep eating bananas. But I love bananas
The polkadotted skater dress in the above photos are from DAMSELOVE!
I really love how comfortable it feels on the skin. It’s their self-manufactured item, so get it fast before it’s gone if you’re a sucker for skater dresses like me!
Decided to use the same white belt that was supposedly for the below ROMPER:

Was planning to wear this on one of the days but I guess it’s too cold. But i’m sure something light and easy like such will be perfect for sunny singapore!
The romper is from DAMSELOVE as well!
Thank you DAMSELOVE for both items!
Follow them on FACEBOOK and TWITTER for updates and sneak previews!
Taipei, Day 3 up next.
Can’t wait to share all my loots!!!
With regards to the items I posted in my Day 1 entry, ALL the items are pending/sold. Email me if you’re still keen and I’ll see if I am able to get extra pieces before I leave!
Please PLEASE PLEASE do not ask me to buy you other items (out of scope ones) because FIRSTLY, I’m NO MIDDLE MAN. I mean, I shop for myself and buy and see the things I like. I get multiple pieces sometimes in case of interested buyers. I have NO incentive to help others shop for what they want because I do not want to charge a fee for that.
SECONDLY, consider my luggage space and available cash as well.
I appreciate the comments/questions on formspring, facebook messages and emails asking me to get THIS/THAT/a particular style/type of clothes but really, I will only get what I want for myself without the intention of “buying to sell” okay?
Gonna reply my Formspring questions right now!
Love,
Mel
Taipei, Day 1
Aside
My entry is going to be short, sweet and to the point. I will try to keep it that way so you don’t have to read too much of my ranting/exclamations.
Met at 6.45am at Changi Airport T3 and was greeted by a beautiful sunrise. I always take the time to appreciate such things. Simple pleasures in life, don’t you think? Okay okay okay, to the point. I will keep that in mind.

egg benedicts with sausage and potatoes was served for brunch. went back right to sleep after that! ![]()

We decided to take the bus to our hotel instead of the cab because there was a straight bus that went there. And it was a lot cheaper!
Think the tickets were about 100++TWD per person instead of 1000TWD for the cab! My uncle booked the hotel right smack in the middle of Taipei at the station– Taipei Main Station. That’s where the cross intersection of most lines are. So it’s super duper convenient for us to get from place to place! ![]()

I love the hotel. The rooms were clean and nice. No frills but really pretty and a princessy touch to it!
FYI: COSMOS HOTEL, No. 43號, Section 1, Zhōngxiào West Rd, Jhongjheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100

The train station is about a 2 minute walk from our hotel and completely sheltered too. We bought a MRT card each with some value inside.
The card itself cost 100TWD. No matter how much you top up, the remainder is refundable. If I’m not wrong, there’s a small fee charged to refund. But I mean, it’s a super small fee. Almost insignificant.

Our first stop was Xi Men Ding! It’s like a bugis street equivalent of Singapore. Exclaimed in excitement the moment I exited from the MRT station! It was pretty crowded but the weather was nice and crowds didn’t bother me too much. The first thing that caught my eye was a brightly lit shop that sold dog stuff. Saw some nice clothes for tinkerbell but they were not within budget so I gave it a miss.
There were an overwhelming number of shops that sold shoes, and I must add: the SAME KIND of shoes. So you could probably hop from shoe shop to shoe shop and find 80% of the stuff there the same. No point checking on the prices bcos they’re roughly the same.
I guess some haggling could work. I bought a pair of wedges for about 400 TWD (roughly 17 bucks SGD)!

Super comfy ![]()

And as we were planning our itinerary, we included a MUST-EAT-LIST. This was one of them: Ah zhong mian xian!
Pretty good although I’m not a fan of taiwanese mian xian’s.

Then I stopped by this small quaint looking stall that sold hand made bracelets and accessories. I’m 90% sure that the maggie mee haired duuuuudddeeeeee could speak English but I spoke to him in mandarin anyway. LIKE A BOSS! ![]()

SUSHI ROLL with korean fillings like kimchi and beef/pork bulgogi. Mashita ![]()

We decided to have BBQ for dinner. It was a really good dinner!

My favourite dish! Tea Rice with Seaweed! It complimented the BBQ so well.

This was our forth item we stuffed ourselves with for the day. SHAVED ICE!! MUST TRY!!!

We were actually heading back towards the train station when a whole bunch of carts started setting up right before our eyes. OH HOLY CRAP! That was around 10pm at night by the way.

We made a mini detour and started shopping spree part 2! Even though my feet were killing me by then, I managed to gather some energy and stamina for the next hour or so of shopping!

I think day 1 was a little of an overkill. We were already considering getting a china plastic bag (you know those hello kitty/mickey mouse ones?) to stuff our loots. Let’s see how this goes by the last day.

My favourite part of a shopping spree: Going back to the hotel room and trying out all my clothes
Didn’t think we could accomplish so much on the first day considering that we only landed in Taiwan at around 1.30pm in the afternoon.
Legs were damn sore. Wallets slightly emptier. Luggages heavier. Stomachs exploding.
It was a good day!
So anyway, here’s what I’ve got! Email me at melsakoh@hotmail.com if you want any of the below! I see some of them again and again!

Will try to update my Day 2 pictures tomorrow!!!!!
ming tian jian wor!
